1. Babies start with around 270 bones
You entered the world with roughly 270 bones, considerably more than the 206 most adults have. You don't lose dozens of them somewhere between preschool and your first job. As you grow, separate bones fuse together, especially in your skull, spine and pelvis. Your sacrum, for example, begins as several vertebrae that eventually join. So your adult skeleton has fewer individual pieces because growing up involves assembling some of them into larger ones.

Bone marrow inside places such as your pelvis, ribs, sternum and vertebrae helps produce red blood cells, many white blood cells and platelets. Those cells carry oxygen, fight infection and help stop bleeding. So the rigid framework you picture when you hear "skeleton" also contains one of your body's major blood-cell factories. Your hip bones, in other words, do far more than keep your jeans in roughly the right place.

Calcium doesn't just help make bones hard. Your nerves, muscles and heart also depend on it, so your body needs to keep blood calcium within a narrow range. Your skeleton acts as the main mineral reserve, holding roughly 99% of the body's calcium. When necessary, your body can move calcium between bone and blood. That means your bones aren't simply using calcium for themselves. They're effectively managing a mineral savings account that the rest of you depends on.

This small U-shaped bone sits high in your neck, supported by muscles and ligaments rather than directly articulating with another bone. It helps anchor structures involved in swallowing and speech, so you use it constantly without ever seeing or thinking about it. Among more than 200 bones, one essentially hangs in place. Your skeleton apparently had room for one architectural rebel.
