Trees trade resources, summon allies, manipulate animals and sometimes keep supporting their neighbors after they’re gone. Once you know what’s happening around you, a walk in the woods gets much stranger.
The Forest Has Its Own Network
1. Trees can trade resources underground
Tree roots mingle with networks of fungi called mycorrhizae, creating partnerships that can move nutrients through forest soil. Fungi help trees collect phosphorus, nitrogen and water, while trees feed their fungal partners carbon-rich sugars. In some forests, researchers have tracked carbon moving between neighboring trees through these underground connections. You’re looking at individual trunks above ground, but below your shoes, the boundaries between them can get surprisingly blurry.
2. Trees can send chemical warnings
When insects start chewing on a tree, the tree doesn’t just sit there and take it. Many species change their chemistry, producing compounds that make their leaves less appealing or releasing airborne chemicals that neighboring plants can detect. Some plants even release scents that attract predators or parasites of the insects attacking them. So that pleasant “green” smell around damaged leaves can sometimes be part of a chemical emergency signal.
3. Dead trees can stay surprisingly connected
A tree stump without leaves looks finished, but sometimes its neighbors keep it alive. Researchers have documented living stumps that receive water and nutrients through root connections with nearby trees, despite having no foliage of their own. One kauri stump in New Zealand maintained water flow by tapping into surrounding trees. That turns a seemingly dead chunk of wood into something much stranger: a living participant in the forest’s shared plumbing.

4. Trees can make their own rain more likely
Forests don’t simply wait around for weather to happen. Trees pull water from the ground and release huge amounts of it into the atmosphere through their leaves, a process called transpiration. That moisture can contribute to cloud formation and rainfall, especially across vast tropical forests. A mature tree can move hundreds of liters of water on a hot day. Scale that up to millions of trees and a forest starts influencing weather far beyond its own shade.
5. Some trees need fire to reproduce
Fire sounds like the worst possible thing for a forest, but certain trees have built it into their life cycle. Some pines produce cones sealed with resin that heat can melt, releasing seeds onto newly cleared ground with less competition and plenty of sunlight. Other fire-adapted trees grow thick bark that protects living tissue from flames. For these species, decades without fire can actually disrupt the conditions their offspring evolved to exploit.
6. Trees can recruit animals as bodyguards
Some trees have turned defense into a business deal. Acacia trees can provide ants with food and hollow structures where colonies live. In return, those ants patrol the tree and attack insects, remove competing vegetation and sometimes swarm larger animals that try to eat the leaves. Picture an ant biting an elephant’s sensitive trunk because it got too close to lunch. Suddenly, thorns seem like the boring defense system.

7. A single tree can cover more ground than you think
What looks like a forest full of separate trees may sometimes contain copies of the same genetic individual. Aspen can reproduce by sending up new trunks, or ramets, from a connected root system. Utah’s famous Pando aspen clone stretches across more than 100 acres and contains tens of thousands of stems. From the roadside, you see a woodland. Genetically, you may be looking at one enormous organism repeatedly popping out of the ground.
8. Some trees were alive before famous ancient monuments existed
The oldest individual trees operate on a timescale that makes human history feel brief. Great Basin bristlecone pines can survive for more than 4,000 years, enduring freezing temperatures, brutal winds and poor mountain soil. Some living specimens began growing before the Roman Empire, classical Athens and much of the history you learned at school. Their battered appearance helps them survive too, because slow growth produces exceptionally dense, durable wood.
9. Forests can hide ancient human landscapes
Dense jungle doesn’t always mean nobody lived there. Archaeologists using LiDAR, which maps terrain with laser pulses from aircraft, have found roads, platforms, reservoirs and settlements beneath thick forest canopies. In parts of Central America, surveys have revealed extensive Maya infrastructure that becomes almost invisible from ground level. The trees didn’t erase those cities. They covered them so thoroughly that researchers needed lasers to see the human-made landscape underneath.

10. Forests store an enormous amount of carbon underground
When you picture a forest storing carbon, you probably picture trunks. But soil, roots and decaying organic matter hold a huge share of forest carbon, and in some forests the underground store dwarfs what you can see above ground. Peat swamp forests take this to an extreme, building carbon-rich layers of partly decomposed plant material over centuries or millennia. Damage the soil and you can release carbon that took generations of trees to accumulate.
